shíshálh Nation 10 Home Rescue Project
This project stands as an example of how innovative partnerships can balance urban densification with sustainability and reconciliation.
Wesgroup, a prominent real estate developer in Canada, acquired 59 single-family homes in Coronation Park, a residential neighbourhood in Port Moody, British Columbia, to build a higher-density community. Of those homes, Renewal Development, in collaboration with moving experts Nickel Bros, assessed and identified ten homes as ideal candidates for rescue, relocation, and repurposing. This process transformed a traditional demolition project into an opportunity to preserve housing and reduce environmental impact.
In spring 2023, Renewal Development approached the shíshálh Nation to present the opportunity of receiving these well-built homes. Guided by their principles of sustainability and stewardship, the shíshálh Nation signed an agreement to acquire the ten homes, repurposing them as affordable rental units for Nation members on Nation lands in Sechelt, BC. The homes are being relocated from Port Moody to their new community, where they will undergo modernization, including energy efficiency upgrades and modest renovations. The addition of nine potential basement suites means these homes could provide housing for up to 19 families.
This project has been made possible through a remarkable collaboration. Wesgroup, committed to sustainable practices, reallocated its $35,000-per-home demolition budget to the shíshálh Nation to offset relocation costs. This innovative funding model demonstrates how developers and communities can work together to support responsible housing solutions while reducing waste. Renewal Development and the shíshálh Nation have provided a pioneering responsible removal service that preserves valuable housing stock and addresses community needs.
To the best of industry knowledge, no project of this scale, combining these partnerships and processes, has ever been undertaken in the Pacific Northwest. The Coronation Park project showcases how creative approaches can facilitate urban densification while preserving homes for second lives. Through their leadership, the shíshálh Nation is setting a powerful example of how rescue-repurpose housing solutions can pave the way for sustainable, cost-effective, and community-centered development.
